1The preceding copy has not been found, nor has any other copy of the letter to which Leonard probably referred, which likely enclosed a first copy of his return of U.S. ships at Barcelona from July through December 1805. His most recent letter to JM that has been found is dated 31 Aug. 1805 (PJM-SS description begins Robert J. Brugger et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Secretary of State Series (12 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1986–). description ends 10:275).

2The enclosed lists (1 p. each) showed that from July through December 1805, twelve American ships arrived at Barcelona, for four of which Leonard was the consignee; and that from January through June 1806, thirty-six American ships arrived, for nine of which Leonard or his firm, Thorndike Leonard & Co., were the consignees.
