To Thomas Jefferson from Samuel Smith, 18 February 1809

Senate Chamber 18 Feby. 09

Dr. Sir/

I do myself the honor to Enclose a Postcript of a letter received last night from One from your friends.—Is it not easy to Counter Order this intention—I have the honor to be/

your Obedt. Servt

DLC: Papers of Thomas Jefferson.

P.S. The Cotten Seed is the present federal Theme, however proper it might be for Mr Jefferson as Mr. Jefferson to comply with a Request from an Agricultural Society, yet as president of the U.S. under present circumstances it would have been as well for him to have Refered it to Another, His letter which many have seen directs Falls & Brown in whose possession it is, to forward it immly to N.Y. to go be the Mentor for France, people here do not like even such a trifling evasion of the Embargo law by the First Magistrate, I Wish he would give up his present intention & let it Remain for more propitious times—
