Th J Randolph seal
Th: Jefferson seal

MS (Mrs. A. Slater Lamond, Alexandria, 1976; photocopy in ViU: TJP); in Randolph’s hand, signed by Randolph and TJ; with 7 Mar. 1823 receipt on verso, in Randolph’s hand, signed by Neilson (edge trimmed): “Recieved from Th J Randolph two hundre[d] dollars on account of the within bond.”

This note apparently replaced one that TJ had sent Neilson six days previously. The earlier note was for $843.50, stipulated two years for repayment, and probably listed only TJ as Neilson’s debtor (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, 2 vols., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1365; TJ to Neilson, 31 May 1820).
