Coll Nicholas called upon me to day, to say that your note for $3000 payable in the Farmers’ bank, falls due tomorrow, and that he has received no note from you to renew it—he was in hopes it might have been sent to me—as it was necessary that some step should immediately be taken, I have put in my note in favor of Coll Nicholas for the amount, pledging myself for the forthcoming of yours as soon as possible—You will be pleased at the same time to send me notes for the renewal of the others—With much respect I am

TJ’s order for $157.98 in favor of James leitch covered a 12 June 1819 payment he made to Charles Massie on TJ’s behalf “for 37.98. for 211. galls. cyder @ .18” as well as loans from Leitch of $40, $25, $20, $10, and $25 made on 14, 17 May, 3, 5, and 10 July 1819, respectively. TJ’s 19 July 1819 draft for $150 in favor of Jacob W. white covered part of the $290.08 due for his wages as overseer at Tomahawk plantation in 1818 (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1353, 1355–7).
