One day prior to this, TJ recorded loaning Jared Richardson $20. On 21 Jan. 1819 TJ also indicated that he had received $50 from James Leitch (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. The latter sum was enclosed in an undated letter written and initialed by Leitch’s clerk James Brown on his employer’s behalf, which stated that “The enclosed $50 is in as small Notes as could be procured” (RC in DLC: TJ Papers, 214:38255; with PoC of TJ to Mathew Carey, 29 Jan. 1819, on verso; addressed: “Mr. Jefferson Monticello”; with additional notation of “$10” by Brown above address).
