RC (DLC); dateline at foot of text; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello Milton Via [i.e., Virginia]”; endorsed by TJ as received 1 Sept. 1818 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: The Federalist, on The New Constitution, written in the year 1788, by Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Madison, and Mr. Jay, with An Appendix, containing the letters of Pacificus and Helvidius, on the Proclamation of Neutrality of 1793; also, the original Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution of the United States, with the amendments made thereto. Jacob Gideon (ca. 1789–1864), printer, was publishing government documents by 1817 in Washington, D.C. He was active in local politics, serving variously as a ward watchman, commissioner of elections, and member of the common council. In 1841 his son George S. Gideon became a partner in his printing and bookbinding business. Gideon died in Washington (Washington Daily National Intelligencer, 6 Dec. 1817, 25 Feb. 1864; City of Washington Gazette, 12 Apr. 1819; Washington Daily National Journal, 26 May, 13 Oct. 1829; Washington National Journal, 26 May 1831; Washington Madisonian [country edition], 16 Jan. 1841).

On 15 Aug. 1818 gideon sent James Madison a copy of the newly published volume. Madison had provided him with his personal copy of the 1799 New York edition of The Federalist, in which he identified the authors of each number and corrected his own essays (Madison, Papers, Retirement Ser., 1:205–10, 212–3, 217, 223–4, 347–8).
