James Sloan (ca. 1786–1819), author and attorney, graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in 1805. Henry M. Brackenridge met him during a visit to Baltimore and described him as “the most accomplished young man” he encountered there. Sloan died in Baltimore (Recollection of Persons and Places in the West [2d ed.; 1868], 135–6; Baltimore: Its History and its People [1912], 2:113; Sloan to TJ, 4 July 1818; Philadelphia Franklin Gazette, 8 Apr. 1819).
