I have received from M Girard a letter for You which I commit to the Mail & two letters of Credit per Duplicate—on Peregaux Lafitte & Co Paris 350$ to Mr Geo Ticknor & to Mr Stephen Catalan 200$—I have Sent them by the Adeline & by the Andrew—former to Bordx latter to Rochelle

Enclosures: (1) Stephen Girard’s letter of credit on Perregaux, Laffitte & Compagnie for George Ticknor, Philadelphia, 30 July 1815, indicating that TJ is “desirous to give a Credit of Three hundred & fifty Dollars, in favour of George Ticknor Esquire of Boston for the purpose of investing the same in Books—I beg that you will pay that sum in conformity, even something more if said sum should be insufficient to complete the purchace alluded to”; and requesting the firm to “place your disbursement & charges for that object to my debit & to forward me your account” (Tr in PPAmP: John Vaughan Papers; at head of text: “Messrs Perregaux Laffitte & Co Paris”; conjoined with RCs of TJ to Vaughan, 11, 15 July 1815, and Tr of following enclosure). (2) Girard’s letter of credit on Perregaux, Laffitte & Compagnie for Stephen Cathalan, Philadelphia, 30 July 1815, indicating that TJ, “Our Respectable late President,” has “requested me to pay on his account Two Hundred Dollars to Mr Stephen Cathalan, Merchant and Consul of the United States residing in Marseilles. Be pleased to remit that Sum to that Gentleman, to place the Same and Charges to my Debit, and to forward me your account relative to that transaction” (Dupl in FrM: Cathalan-Samatan Collection, addressed: “Messrs Perregaux Laffitte & Co Paris,” at head of text: “2te”; Tr in same, in an unidentified hand, with attestation signed by Vaughan; Tr in PPAmP: Vaughan Papers, conjoined with RCs of TJ to Vaughan, 11, 15 July 1815, and Tr of preceding enclosure).

The schooner adeline cleared the port of Philadelphia for Bordeaux on 1 Aug., while the ship Andrew cleared the same port for the French city of La rochelle on 31 July (Philadelphia Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser, 31 July, 1 Aug. 1815).
