John Nicholas (ca. 1758–1836) was a captain in the Continental army who succeeded his father and namesake as Albemarle County clerk, serving from 1792 to 1815. In the latter year he moved to Buckingham County, although he retained substantial property holdings in Albemarle. A committed Federalist, Nicholas is best known for his role in the Langhorne incident of 1797, in which he accused TJ’s nephew Peter Carr of forging a letter to George Washington that unsuccessfully attempted to elicit an undiplomatic response from the president. Nicholas was an active trustee of the Albemarle Academy in 1814. Although TJ privately condemned him in 1811 as a “miserable scribbler,” they corresponded amicably in 1819 about Nicholas’s efforts to obtain a state pension (PTJ description begins Julian P. John Carr (ca. 1763–1824) was admitted to the bar in 1783 and subsequently served as deputy clerk of Albemarle County. Edward Garland (d. 1817) rose from lieutenant in the 1st Virginia Regiment to captain in the 14th Virginia Regiment of the Continental army, 1775–77, and served as an adjutant in the militia during the War of 1812. He acted as a sheriff in the 1790s, became a county magistrate in 1801, and represented Albemarle County in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1800–04.
