Mr Thornton presents his Respects to the President of the United States, and is sorry that he cannot have the Honour of waiting on him on Friday next.

Upon Anthony Merry’s arrival in Washington and presentation of his credentials, Edward thornton had Lord Hawkesbury’s permission to return to England, but stayed in America until July 1804 (Malcolm Lester, Anthony Merry Redivivus: A Reappraisal of the British Minister to the United States, 1803-6 [Charlottesville, 1978], 18-19).
