Andrew Marschalk (1767-1838) entered the army as an ensign in 1791, and military service took him to the Mississippi Valley by 1797. While still in the army, he set up a press and began to print a variety of items, including the laws of Mississippi Territory. In 1802, he left the army and started a weekly newspaper in Natchez, the Mississippi Herald, which became the Natchez Gazette shortly before it folded in 1808. He later established the Washington Republican in Washington, Mississippi, and, in 1818, the Mississippi State Gazette. Marschalk served as a staff officer of the territorial militia and was, in 1803, a Natchez alderman (New York Mercantile Advertiser, 18 July 1803; Norfolk Gazette and Publick Ledger, 9 Nov. 1810; New Orleans Daily Picayune, 17 Aug. 1838; Charles S.
