To Thomas Jefferson from Albert Gallatin, 30 November 1803
From Albert Gallatin
Treasury Department 30th Nover. 1803
Sir
I have the honour to enclose a letter from the Commissioner of the revenue informing me of the resignation of the Supervisor of Maryland.
It seems that the office may be discontinued; and the propriety of annexing its duties to the office of Surveyor of the district of Baltimore with the salary of two hundred & fifty dollars a year and a reasonable allowance for clerk hire is respectfully submitted.
I have the honour to be with great respect Sir Your obedt. Servt.
Albert Gallatin
RC (DLC); at foot of text: “The President of the United States”; endorsed by TJ as received from the Treasury Department on 30 Nov. and “Superintt. Maryld” and so recorded in SJL, where TJ altered “Superintendt.” to “Supervisor.” Enclosure: William Miller to Gallatin, Revenue Office, Treasury Department, 30 Nov., noting that on 28 Nov. John Kilty resigned as supervisor of Maryland to become the state’s register of the land office for the Western Shore; Kilty recommends Daniel Delozier, surveyor at Baltimore, as the public officer “who is already perfectly acquainted with the business and Accounts of the Office” and could complete the work with “much promptitude” if he has a “suitable provision for Clerk hire”; Kilty assures Miller that he will “give all the aid towards completing the business, that his new engagement will permit” (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 58, LSCR;
, 47:947-8).For the procedure followed when a revenue office was discontinued, see Gallatin to TJ, 30 June 1803.
