From Samuel Harrison Smith
Oct. 4. 1801.
Samuel H. Smith presents his respectful compliments to Mr. Jefferson, to whom he encloses the within Letter. It was thought too unimportant to notice during Mr. Jeffersons absence, and is still presumed to respect some trifling circumstance. But as it may be connected with something of interest, it is submitted.
RC (MoSHi: Jefferson Papers); torn; addressed: “The Preside[nt]”; endorsed by TJ as received 6 Oct. and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure not identified.
