New York, June 28, 1798. “Immediately upon receipt of your Note2 I … found that 940 … are Enrolled, which I suppose is the better half of the Ward.”

1. Rutgers was a large landholder in New York City and a well-known philanthropist. He was also the assessor of the seventh ward of New York City. Rutgers signed this letter: “in behalf of the Committee of the 7th Ward.”

This note was written to H in his capacity as a member of the Military Committee of New York City. See “Call for a Meeting,” June 4, 1798, note 2. See also the introductory note to H to James McHenry, June 1, 1798.
