New York, June 28, 1798. “Immediately upon receipt of your Note2 I … found that 940 … are Enrolled, which I suppose is the better half of the Ward.”

1Rutgers was a large landholder in New York City and a well-known philanthropist. He was also the assessor of the seventh ward of New York City. Rutgers signed this letter: “in behalf of the Committee of the 7th Ward.”
