To Tench Coxe
AL, RG 58, General Records, 1791–1803, National Archives.
1. H was apparently mistaken in his reference to “Coll Neville,” for the letter in question was undoubtedly that which General John Neville (rather than his son Colonel Presley Neville) wrote to Coxe on July 18, 1794. For this letter, see “Deposition of Francis Mentges,” August 1, 1794, note 2, and H to George Washington, August 5, 1794, note 77.
2. H is referring to his letter to Washington of August 5, 1794. In the margin of the draft of that letter H had written several questions, and he was presumably requesting Neville’s letter at this time from Coxe in order to complete his letter to Washington for publication. See H to Washington, August 6, 16, 1794.
At the bottom of this letter Coxe wrote “Sent.”
