1. This letter has been incorrectly attributed to H in both John C. Fitzpatrick, Calendar of the Correspondence of George Washington with the Officers (Washington, 1915), II, 1362, and in , I, 140–42. Actually it was written by Major William Galvan, who had been sent by Washington to Cape Henry to wait for the arrival of the French (see , XVIII, 367–69, 372–73, 375). The letter is in French.
