7. Joseph Newman of Newburyport was commissioned on Aug. 10 to command the Gates, a brigantine: Claghorn, Naval Officers, p. 219. Kerhalec wrote BF again on April 13 to ask BF’s intercession on behalf of Newman, who had brought sugar and cocoa beans to Brest to pay for doubling his ship’s hull in copper only to find the farmers general charging him duty. APS. We have no record of a response.
