Grand le plutot possible il n’y auroit point d’inconvenient d’en donner deux au lieu d’un.

Addressed: A Monsieur / Monsieur le Docteur / Franklin / Passy

Notation: Grand. 5. Xbre 1780.

1In the hand of his son Henry.

2The present letter was written immediately below a copy of a Dec. 5 letter from Necker to Grand asking for a duplicate of BF’s letter of credit, which Grand had sent him. In it, says Necker, BF speaks of payments that he has to make in France and which have determined him to give this letter of credit. To avoid all misunderstanding and error he asks Grand to remind BF of their agreement that Rochambeau will be absolutely free to use or not to use this letter of credit and that nothing should be asked of the finance ministry until it learns that supplies have been furnished in America and receipts received.
