Alnwick Jany 30th 1788
May it please your Excellency
To accept of my most gratefull thanks for the wholesome advice which you gave me on my being recommended to you by Dr price in Augt 1786 respecting the disposition which Dr Witherspoon gave me to 600 Acres of land in the state of Vermont.
Some days ago I had a letter from a Mr Thomas Goldbreath Mercht in Islington near London informing me that he had received the Deeds executed by Dr Witherspoon and his wiferegistrated at Vermont
He adds that his friend at New york to whom the care of the business was committed by him informs That the former disposition was not sufficient that he had got a new one on parchment and returned the old one.
According to this information you see how great my obligations <
to> are to you good Sir and to my worthy friend Dr price for without his recommendation I could hardly have ventured to have given you the trouble of hearing my case and without your advice it would seem I would have had nothing but a deed in several respects illegal for good three hundred pounds ster. for which I gave him a draft on a Mr Walker in Glasgow and which he wrote me cost him no other trouble but just to call on him and receive I would be greatly obliged to any friend of Dr Witherspoon who would account satisfactorily for this conduct on the principles of an honest man.
I could inform your Excellency of many shocking aggravations but at present I refrain my pen in hopes that the Dr will make good his hand writing to me before he left Scotland in 1784 That was to take back my land again if I desired and returned me the price with interest. If this is not done I shall be obliged or at least I will probably think it a service done to mankind to shew them his conduct with the aggravations of it toward the man who at that very time was saving by acts of disinterested friendship the Drs life. For according to the Doctors own letter from America our care was the means of saving him alive
Could your Excellency with propriety drop a hint to Mr Ramsay advising him to recommend it to Dr Witherspoon his late father in law to make a point of paying me soon. payment would make peace between my wife and me for she often has made me uneasy on this head and it would enable me to educate my children who must suffer in this respect through the want of it.
I am with great respect / your Excellencys / very much obliged / and humble Servant
