The regimental Pay-Masters are to bring in their Pay-Rolls for the month of August to the Deputy Pay-Master General for examination: The nine months men in the Massachusetts line who were mustered in August are to be entered from the time they were respectively received by the continental officer at Spring field and to draw pay accordingly.

GW’s expenses for this date included £48 “To Cash pd Wm McIntire for extra wages as acting Stewart to His Excelly as pr receipt”; £26.8 “To Cash pd Francis Meryman for extra months pay & allowance as hostler to His Excelly—as $ receipt”; £14.8 “To Cash pd Elnathan Sanderson extra wages as hostler to His Excelly as $ receipt”; and £2 “To McIntires expenses in the Country after necessaries at Several times” (Revolutionary War Household Expenses, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, Ser. 5).
A receipt of this date for $120, signed by William McIntire and written at headquarters at West Point reads: “Received of Major Gibbs one hundred & twenty dollars in full for 12 months Extra pay @ 10 dollars pr month. allowed by His Excellency for my acting as Stewart to His family.” Another receipt of this date for $66, signed by Merriman and written at headquarters at West Point, reads: “Received of Major Gibbs Sixteen dollars in full for my wages as Hostler to His Excellency. at the rate of 20/ pr month Extra. above what I received in the 2d Virginia Regt—Also fifty dollars for an Extra month since the time of service has expired that I engaged for.” Another receipt of this date for $36, signed by Sanderson and written at headquarters at West Point, reads: “Received of Major Gibbs in full to this day thirty six dollars for Extra pay. (@ 3 dolls month. more than I received in the Guards as a Soldier) as Hostler to His Excellency the Commander in Cheif” (Revolutionary War Accounts, Vouchers, and Receipted Accounts 1, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, Ser. 5).
William McIntire (b. 1753), of Caroline County, Va., enlisted for one year as a private in the 2d Virginia Regiment in October 1775 and, in September 1776, re-enlisted for three years in that regiment. He transferred to GW’s guard in May 1777 and was promoted to corporal in June 1777. In March 1778, McIntire received a promotion to sergeant; however, he was reduced to the ranks later the same month. McIntire was discharged from the army in September 1779. In August 1826, he resided in Gallatin County, Kentucky.
Elnathan Sanderson (1759–1831), of Deerfield, Mass., enlisted in March 1777 for three years in the 8th Massachusetts Regiment. He transferred to GW’s guard in March 1778. Sanderson left the army in March 1780.
