Dr sir
You last year mentioned you would pay my Agent in Richmond for the Literary Gazette. I am sorry to tell you I have no agent there this year.1 a remittance by Mail of the Amt $6.00 is respectfully Requested by
Jas Maxwell
RC (MHi); at head of text: “Thos Jefferson Esq”; endorsed by TJ as received 7 Feb. 1822 and so recorded in SJL.
The literary gazette described itself as a third series of the Analectic Magazine. It began weekly publication in January 1821 but ended in December of the same year. A missing letter from TJ to Maxwell of 7 Feb. 1822 is recorded in SJL with the bracketed notation “10.D.” TJ listed this payment in his financial records as a remittance “for Literary gazette to Dec. 31. & for Portfolio in advance” ( , 2:1383).
