After Orders
Thomas Brown of the 7th pennsylvania regiment was tried the 12th Instant at the Division General Court martial whereof Colonel Angell was President, for “Plundering the Inhabitants while on Command at Paramus and abusing a Woman” Pled Guilty: The Court considering the great irregularity of his general Conduct, that he was lately capitally condemned for the same Crime and pardon’d Sentenced him to suffer Death more than two thirds of the Court agreeing thereto.1
The Commander in Chief confirms the Sentence.
As in the course of the Campaign a good Corps of Sappers and Miners will be extremely useful and absolutely necessary the General directs that one man be drawn from each regiment for this purpose; an able bodied man, intelligent, Sober, and engaged for the War. Those of this Part of the Army are to Assemble the day after tomorrow at Guard mounting.

On this date, Maj. Caleb Gibbs, commander of GW’s guard, wrote a receipt for items received from Ephraim Blaine, commissary general of purchases, “for the use of His Excellency General Washington … Viz.—One pipe No.4 containg one hundred and three gallons & one h[ogs]h[ea]d No. 12 Contg fifty one gallons of Maderia wine, two hundred and two pounds & fourteen ounces of Loaf sugar, one hundred & ninety eight pounds of Muscovada sugar, twenty four pounds of Chocolate, one hundred and fifteen smoakd neet’s tongues, twelve bottles of Mustard, one barrell of vinegar[,] three bottles of sweet oil, Eleven pounds of hyson tea, and [[ ]] gallons of Spirit” (Revolutionary War Vouchers and Receipted Accounts, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5). A neat is “An animal of the ox-kind; an ox or bullock, a cow or heifer” ( ).
