To George Washington from Edmund Randolph, 9 November 1794
From Edmund Randolph
Monday p.m. [9 Nov. 1794]1
The Secretary of state has the honor of informing the President, that, if his leisure will permit, the calls from the treasury department render a further number of Sea letters necessary.2
AL, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DNA: RG 59, GW’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State.
1. Monday actually was 10 November. However, the docket with this letter was changed from 10 to 9 Nov., and a similar change was made to the date on the letter-book copy. Randolph had misdated his previous letter “Monday 2 o’clock Novr 9. 1794,” and since evidence indicates that 9 Nov. is the correct date for that letter, the presumption is that 9 Nov. is the correct date for this letter as well.
2. The entry for 13 Nov. in GW’s journal of proceedings reads: “Sent to The Secy. of States Office 500 sea-Letters, being the last of 1000 last sent from him to get my signature” ( , 321).
