1. Jay probably enclosed Letters for Promoting the Silk Manufacture on the Coast of Coromandel (Madras, 1794), written by the physician James Anderson of Madras. That volume in GW’s library bore the following inscriptions: “To Doctor Jas. Anderson Edinburgh pr. favor of Mr. Haig” and “To His Excellency George Washington Esqr President of Congress, America From His most obedient Hubl. Servt Jas. Anderson 15th Dec 1794.” ( , 12). James Anderson of Edinburgh, who had earlier sent GW “a copy as compleat as I can make it, of the correspondence in India of my worthy friend Dr Anderson at Madras” (Anderson to GW, 15 Aug. 1793), may have enclosed the new pamphlet with his letter to Jay of 18 Dec. 1794 (not found, but acknowledged in Jay to Anderson, 15 Feb. 1795, NNC: Jay Papers).
