[Bordeaux, after 14 July 1785.] Sends TJ a copy of a letter received by the last post from Toulon, which indicates that the Algerines’ activities are “influenced by other than their private piratical passion”; he will also advise Gov. Hancock.

Tr (DNA: PCC, No. 87, i); 2 p.; in David Humphreys’ hand; undated; at foot of letter: “No. 9.” The text of Tr follows immediately after that of the letter transmitted—Soulange to the directors of commerce of Guienne Province, 14 July 1785, advising that Algiers had armed 8 vessels to cruise from Cape St. Vincent to the Azores against the Americans (in French, with an English translation). Tr (DNA: PCC, No. 107, i). A similar letter, except for one additional paragraph in the covering letter, was sent by Bondfield to Thomas Barclay (DNA: PCC, No. 91, i). A copy was also sent by TJ to John Jay as enclosure No. 9 to his second letter of 14 Aug. 1785. See also John Paul Jones to TJ, 31 July 1785.
