George Washington Papers

To George Washington from Thomas Johnson, 3 February 1792 [letter not found]

from Thomas Johnson, 3 Feb. 1792. GW refers in his letter to the Commissioners for the District of Columbia of 6 Mar. to “Mr Johnson’s letter of the 3d of february.”1

1Johnson’s letter apparently included a draft, which has not been found, of an advertisement for designs for the Capitol. Thomas Jefferson advised the commissioners on 6 Mar.: “You will doubtless also consider it necessary to advertize immediately for plans of the capitol and President’s house. The sketch of an advertizement for the plan of a capitol which Mr. Johnson had sent to the President, is now returned with some alterations, and one also for a President’s house. Both of them subject to your pleasure, and when accomodated to that, if you will return them they shall be advertized here and elsewhere” (Jefferson Papers description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends , 23:224–28; see also GW to the Commissioners for the District of Columbia, 6 Mar., and GW to David Stuart, 8 March).
