Wake Welch

MS (MoSHi: Jefferson Papers); in a clerk’s hand, except for the firm’s signature by Welch.

A receipt from William Reeves, London, 25 Apr. 1786, records TJ’s payment of interest of £40 to Wakelin Welch, Sr., surviving partner of Cary, Moorey & Welch. On verso TJ recorded the following:

(MS in MoSHi: Jefferson Papers; with five lines heavily canceled between first and second entries in TJ’s account; endorsed by TJ). For the antecedents, see TJ to Francis Eppes, 22 Apr. 1786. TJ made provisions for the payment of this private debt at the same time he provided bonds for the payment of the sum he owed to Welch as one of the executors of the Wayles estate (TJ to John Wickham, 20 Jan. 1797).
