From John Jay to the President of Congress (Arthur St. Clair), 9 May 1787

To the President of Congress (Arthur St. Clair)

Office for foreign Affairs 9th. May 1787

Sir

As the State of my Health requires, and that of the Office will soon admit of my making an Excursion into the Country for ten Days or a Fortnight, I request the Permission of Congress for that Purpose. I would confine myself to a convenient Distance from the City, and in Case I should be sooner wanted, Mr. Remsen would immediately give me Notice of it.—I have the Honor to be with great Respect and Esteem Your Excellency’s Most obedt. and hble: Servt.

John Jay

His Excellency The President of Congress
