The above is a Statemt of what is due to the A Society according to the lists sent me—I have directed my son to sign the above recpt if it should be convenient to you to send the amot by him. The late law was article six, section two of the Mutual Assurance Society’s revised constitution of 1810, which allowed attorneys and collectors a 5 percent commission on premiums collected (Constitution, Rules and Regulations of the Mutual Assurance Society against Fire on Buildings in the State of Virginia [Richmond?, 1810], 6–7; copy at ViHi).
