[Philadelphia, May 5, 1792. The calendar description of this letter reads: “Enclosing Application of Thomas Mendenhall1 for position of Assay Master of the Mint.” Letter not found.]

1. From September 9 to December 18, 1790, Mendenhall had been superintendent of a paper mill in Chester County, Pennsylvania, that produced paper used for Treasury Department certificates (D, RG 217, Miscellaneous Treasury Accounts, 1790–1894, Account No. 1100, National Archives).
