On 8 June, James Anderson also wrote James Monroe a letter from Paris requesting a consular post (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR; endorsed by TJ as received 15 Sep. and “Anderson Jas. of S.C. to Govr. Monroe} to be Consul in France”). Monroe probably brought the letter to TJ. Anderson first addressed TJ about an appointment in September 1792. In June 1802, TJ appointed him vice commercial agent at Sète (Cette), in France, and the next year the Senate confirmed his appointment as commercial agent there (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 59, PTCC; JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States … to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828, 3 vols. description ends , 1:433, 440; Vol. 24:423–4).
