To Thomas Jefferson from Tench Coxe, [ca. 15 September 1801]
From Tench Coxe
[ca. 15 Sep. 1801]
This letter is transmitted, respectfully, as the only information I possess of the Gentleman, tho I should rely on the recommendation of Mr. le Ray (de Chaumont) Junr. had he given one.
T. C.
RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR); undated; on same sheet as James Anderson to Coxe, Paris, 9 June 1801, requesting a consular post in France, Spain, or Italy, and naming Jacques Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont as a reference; at foot of text: “Tench Cox Esquire Philadelphia”; endorsed by TJ: “Anderson James of S.C. to Tench Coxe to be Consul.”
On 8 June, James Anderson also wrote James Monroe a letter from Paris requesting a consular post (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR; endorsed by TJ as received 15 Sep. and “Anderson Jas. of S.C. to Govr. Monroe} to be Consul in France”). Monroe probably brought the letter to TJ. Anderson first addressed TJ about an appointment in September 1792. In June 1802, TJ appointed him vice commercial agent at Sète (Cette), in France, and the next year the Senate confirmed his appointment as commercial agent there (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 59, PTCC; , 1:433, 440; Vol. 24:423–4).
