MS (MHi); entirely in Francis’s hand; endorsed by TJ on verso. Not recorded in SJL.
John Francis was the owner of the hotel at 13 South Fourth Street in Philadelphia that served as TJ’s residence while in the city during his years as vice president, as it had previously for John Adams. Two senators (John Brown of Kentucky and John Henry of Maryland) and seven representatives (Nathaniel Freeman, Jr., Thompson J. Skinner and Joseph B. Varnum of Massachusetts, Matthew Clay and Walter Jones of Virginia, William B. Grove of North Carolina, and Abraham Baldwin of Georgia) also lived at the Francis hotel in 1797 (ii, 955n; Stephens’s Philadelphia Directory, for 1796… [Philadelphia, 1796], 65, 207–11; A List of the Names, and Places of Residence, of the Members of the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States [Philadelphia, 1797], No. 32975). Before TJ left Philadelphia he paid Francis an additional $9.50, for extending his stay two days and for postage ( , ii, 965).
