The SUMMARY ESTIMATE printed above is probably based on the plans and specifications for the Washington, D.C., jail prepared by George Hadfield and forwarded to TJ by Daniel C. Brent in his letter of 26 June. TJ’s notation on the verso refers to excavating at the President’s House conducted in 1804, about which time work commenced on extensive improvements to the grounds and the construction of wings for the building ( , 1:109–18).
