Alexander Fisher came down in the same Steam boat with Maria & being obliged to return almost immediately I am very much occupied in making some necessary arrangements relating to his Claim.4 I will attend to the Suggestions in your last letter— We are beginning (thanks to the Eastern people) to pluck up our spirits tho we are yet by much too timid. The Clintonians talk against the War yet their Newspapers are loud in its support. Their faction is a very unprincipled one & much too cunning to be wise— Thus in the wicked annexation of the two first wards of this City to Long Island for the election of two members of Congress they have made an Arrangement which must defeat themselves, for either the New York federalists or the Madisonians of Suffolk will elect the Members. But it was thought adviseable to preserve the appearance of Union in the Democratic party of the State, for fear of lessening the Opinion of Mr Clinton’s Influence. The same Policy operated at the time of the Embargo, & will I fear prevent any union with us on the present occasion—

Nancy looks remarkably well. This morning however she is indisposed. Bruce had prepared the Bismuth I purchased & Nancy took it last evening— it has disagreed with her stomach & ^this morning^ operated as an emetic. Bruce ascribes this Effect to the Bismuth itself which he thinks has not been pure— He has stopped the vomiting & she is now much better— Maria looks quite as well as usual— Our family is quite well— I am my dear father Your very Affectionate Son
