I am directed by Col: Newton to furnish you with two pipes of wine, which I have this day shipped on board the sloop Maria Capt: O’Meara, to the address of Mr: John Barnes, of George Town—the account is annexed—The quality is similar to that I sent before & I hope will give equal satisfaction—

A bill of lading intended for John Barnes likely accompanied the shipment of brazil quality Madeira wine (MS in ViU; being a printed form dated 21 Feb. 1803, filled out by James Taylor, Jr., and signed by Francis O. Meara, describing a shipment of two pipes of wine branded with Thomas Newton’s mark on the Maria bound for Alexandria, “OMeara,” master, with subsequent shipment to Georgetown; endorsed on verso by Barnes as payment for freight from Norfolk to Alexandria for $4.25, from Alexandria to Georgetown for $1.33, and from Georgetown to the President’s House for $1.00, for a total of $6.58).
