1. Edmond Genet, recently appointed by France as its new minister to the United States, arrived in Charleston, S.C., aboard the French frigate Embuscade on 8 April 1793. The enclosed Charleston newspaper was probably the 9 April issue of the City Gazette & Daily Advertiser, in which appeared a mention of Genet’s arrival on the previous date. By the time GW wrote this letter, Genet had already left on his overland trip to Philadelphia, where he presented his letter of credence to GW on 18 May (Provisional Executive Council of France to GW, 30 Dec. 1792, note 2;JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed.
