3 March 1813. “Conformably to the Resolution of the House of Representatives of the 27th of January last I transmit ‘Rolls of the persons having office or employment of a public nature under the United States.’”1

1. On 27 Jan. 1813 the House of Representatives approved a resolution introduced a few days previously by John Randolph of Virginia calling on the president for “a list of the names of persons holding offices under the Government of the United States” (, 12th Cong., 2d sess., 920–22, 1167). In response, JM forwarded rolls of army, navy, state department, post office, and treasury department personnel (206 pp.), including the lists sent him by John Armstrong on 24 Feb. 1813.
