Treasy Dept Decem: 19. 1794.

The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor to communicate to the President a letter from the Commissioner of the Revenue of the 13th instant, on the subject of a Keeper of the Lighthouse (Lighted Beacon) near Sherburn in Nantucket. He believes that it is adviseable to appoint the person therein mentioned.1 ’Tis a case, in which there is not likely to be much choice.

1. Tench Coxe’s letter to Hamilton of 13 Dec. mentioned Tristram Coffin as a man earlier engaged for the post by the collector (DNA: RG 26, Lighthouse Letters; see also Hamilton Papers description begins Harold C. Syrett et al., eds. The Papers of Alexander Hamilton. 27 vols. New York, 1961–87. description ends , 17:443). On 23 Dec., Coxe wrote to Stephen Hussey, the collector at Nantucket, to announce that GW had approved the appointment of Coffin (DNA: RG 26, Lighthouse Letters). Sherburne is an early name for what is now the town of Nantucket.
