41779 is the earliest possible year. There was, so far as we know, no public celebration in France of American Independence Day in 1777 and Grand, the commissioners’ banker, did attend their party in 1778: Butterfield, John Adams Diary, II, 317. In late June, 1779, BF sent out printed invitations to Independence Day festivities to be held on Monday, July 5: XXIX, 726–7.
