David Peloquin to Peter Jay
Bristol, 26 July–6 August 1763
Dear Cousin
I was duly favoured with yours of 14th of April last, with an inclosed for Sir James Jay1 which I immediately forwarded to him and in about three weeks after being the 13th inst. I advised him of the result of the inquiry I had made here among the attorneys with regard to putting out Your Son Cousin John to one of them, which was that the Young Gentleman must engage himself for five Years and that two to three hundred pounds be paid down with him, to which I added that as it was apparently much more for his Brother’s advantage to be placed at the temple or one of the inns of Court than at a private office here he would see on what conditions it might be brought to bear, but I have not yet heard from him, and find by the publick papers that on the 19 instant he was at Tunbridge.2 For my part mine acquaintance lies very little among the Lawyers, who are so thick set in this city that most people wonder in what manner many of em get their bread.
I will pay the Executors of the Late Mr. Samuel Piguenit £8 9s 3-¼d on your account as soon as I hear of your remittance by bill of £12–10 on Edward Pearson being discharged.
Herewith you will receive the Magazines from April to June inclusive. My Sisters and Self join in Love and esteem for you and all Your family, and I am with affection, Dear Cousin, Your very Humble Servant
David Peloquin
We are now at the 6 of August. Since what above written I have Your favours of 14 and 28 June, by the Latter of which I observe with concern that a fresh warr was breaking out in Your quarter of the Globe, which, unless nipt in its bud, might turn out a bad affair.3 Sir James Jay arrived here yesterday and will write you by this opportunity. We are sorry to here of Cousin Evey’s indisposition and hope Your next will inform us of her indisposition recovery. I am at Supra
