I. David Humphreys to Thomas Jefferson, [4 April 1786]
I. David Humphreys to Thomas Jefferson
[4 Apr. 1786]
‘I have made no contracts for the other four, viz. for Genl. Washington’s on the evacuation of Boston, for Morgan, Washington and Howard on the affair of the Cowpens, because the designs for them have not been in readiness for execution until the present time. Nor can that for Genl. Morgan be commenced without farther information of the numbers killed, prisoners &c in the action to be perpetuated. These documents I will endeavor to get the Secretary at war to forward immediately.’
Tr of Extract (DLC: TJ Papers, 10: 1596v); in TJ’s hand; at foot of TJ’s copy of resolution of Congress of 9 Mch. 1781 and of descriptions of the medals for Morgan, Col. Washington, and Howard (see note describing document 6 under Document in the present series), TJ wrote the following prefatory note to the above extract: “Colo. Humph’s letter to me of Apr. 4.”
No other text of this letter has been found, and it is not recorded in SJL. In speaking of the other four, Humphreys could only have alluded in the missing parts of the letter to the medals of Greene and Gates, for which he had by implication executed contracts. The contract with Dupré for the Greene medal was made 19 Nov. 1785 and is printed in , i, xli. That with Gatteaux for the Gates medal, not found, was presumably made about the same time.
