To James Madison from Albert Gallatin, 27 June 1806
From Albert Gallatin
Treasury Department 27th June 1806
Sir
I have the honor to transmit a sketch of Grand Menan island, received from the collector of Passamaquody, & which he states to be more correct than the former.1 It seems that there are several large islands adjacent to Grand Menan, which may render some attention necessary in the language which may be used in any convention respecting that subject.2 I have the honor to be respectfully Sir Your obedt. Servt.
Albert Gallatin
RC and enclosure (DLC: Gallatin Papers). Docketed by Wagner. For enclosure, see n. 1.
1. Gallatin enclosed a hand-drawn map of Grand Manan Island (1 p.; docketed by Wagner), which showed rivers and other features of the 33,000-acre island’s terrain as well as roads and buildings. The map also depicted numerous smaller islands to the southeast of Grand Manan, the largest of which, labeled “White Island,” was 1,300 acres. For the former map, see Gallatin to JM, 7 May 1806, 11:545.
2. For JM’s recent instructions to James Monroe regarding negotiations with Great Britain on Grand Manan, see ibid., 569–70, and JM to Monroe, 4 June 1806.
