1. The estate of James Steptoe, of Hominy Hall, Westmoreland County, who died about 1757, included several hundred acres of land near Mount Vernon. His daughter Anne later became the fourth wife of GW’s brother Samuel Washington.

2. John Addison and William Digges of Prince Georges County, Md., were among those who had had claims on the land at Clifton’s Neck which GW acquired from William Clifton in May 1760. See GW to Benjamin Waller, 2 April 1760, n.1; Robert Carter Nicholas and George Wythe to GW, 27 May 1760; and William Digges to GW, 4 June 1760, n.1. GW also paid them 1,089 pounds of tobacco (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 101).

3. In 1752 GW surveyed for Dr. John McCormick (d. 1769) 157 acres on Bullskin Run. John Adams was GW’s wagon driver at the Bullskin plantation.

4. This is Richard Stephenson of Frederick County.

5. This payment was for 15 bars of iron, a hank of silk, and 2 pairs of men’s shoes bought the previous year (Daniel Payne’s account book, MdHi). Daniel Payne’s flourishing store was in operation from at least 1755 to 1761. Payne was a justice of Prince William County.

6. On this day John Gist signed an agreement accepting a cash payment from GW for relinquishing the remainder of his lease on 106 acres, a part of the land that GW had bought from Sampson Darrell (Fairfax County Deed Book D [1755–61], 757–59).

7. Samuel and Jane Warner were tenants on the Clifton tract just bought by GW. On 15 Aug. GW paid Samuel and Jane Warner for the residue of their lease from William Clifton (Fairfax County Deed Book D [1755–61], 776–78).

8. Joseph Gardner was a tenant on GW’s new Clifton’s Neck land.

9. Robert Johnston rented land on Bullskin Run to GW. This may be the land GW surveyed for Johnston in 1752 (Papers, Colonial Series description begins W. W. Abbot et al., eds. The Papers of George Washington, Colonial Series. 10 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1983–95. description ends , 1:31).

10. GW indicated in his account with the commissioners of Clifton’s affairs that he paid Clifton £63 currency and £30 sterling (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 101).

11. Benedict was a shipping town on the Patuxent River in Maryland about thirty miles south and east of Mount Vernon.

12. William Ransom of Fairfax County died in 1762 or 1763. For Boson’s flight, see Cash Accounts, April 1760, n.5.
