Th: Jefferson asks the favor of mr Garrett, when he shall have recieved the money for the University on his last draught, to procure a remittance of 400.D. of it to mr John Vaughan of Philadelphia, subject to my direction on behalf of the University.

RC (ViU: TJP-PP); dateline at foot of text; addressed: “Alexander Garrett esq. Charlottesville”; with receipt from TJ to Garrett on verso, dated 13 Feb. 1820, acknowledging that he had been given a 7 Feb. 1820 draft for $400 of William Dandridge, cashier of the Bank of Virginia, on the cashier of the Farmers and Mechanics’ Bank of Philadelphia, to be remitted to Thomas Appleton via John Vaughan on the account of Michele and Giacomo Raggi (MS in ViU: TJP-PP; in TJ’s and Garrett’s hands, signed by TJ; docketed by Garrett: “Jefferson Thomas $400 13th Feby 1820,” with an additional note in an unidentified hand that the sum was “For M & G Raggi”). Not recorded in SJL.
