Gentlemen of the Senate.
The Office of Surveyor of the Port of Suffolk, in the State of Virginia, having become vacant by the resignation of Benjamin Bartlett, I nominate Lemuel Reddick to be Surveyor of said Port.1

1. Lemuel Riddick, Jr., had been recommended to GW for this appointment by Josiah Parker on 19 Dec. 1791. Tobias Lear delivered the nomination on 29 Dec., and the Senate confirmed Riddick’s appointment the following day ( 1:92–93). Lear informed Thomas Jefferson of the appointment on 31 Dec. (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters).
