J’ai attendu longtemps à vous écrire & je pense que vous vous étes bien impatienté tout le temps que nous avons été séparés. Je vous eus écris plutôt, mais je voulois un peu connoitre l’Angleterre. Nous fumes dix jours dans notre voyage, nous nous embarquames à Dunkerque, débarquames à Chatham, & arrivames à Londres le lendemain matin tous en bonne santé, Dieu merci. Un mois & demi après notre arrivée à Londres, mon Papa partit pour Philadelphie2 après nous avoir mis en pension chez le Dr. Rose à Chiswick.3 J’aime Londres c’est une belle ville, très propre de la grandeur de Paris, on prétend même que le nombre d’habitants est égal. Je m’accoutume aux mets des Anglois dont les François ont si mauvaise opinion; leur grosse viande, leur Pudding en gateau sont excellents. Faites mes compliments à Mr Puech & a Mde Montgommery.4

1. Edward Nathaniel Bancroft (1772–1842) was the eldest child of Edward Bancroft and Penelope Fellows Bancroft. After graduating from Cambridge in 1794, he became a celebrated physician and author: ODNB.
2. Bancroft left Paris with his family in mid-June; he sailed to America on Aug. 13: XL, 161n, 331n.
3. Schoolmaster William Rose was an old friend of BF’S: XI, 98n, 100n. Bancroft wrote to WTF on July 11 that his sons would begin school at Dr. Rose’s in Chiswick the next day. He had rented a furnished house for the rest of the family and would soon be ready to depart (APS).
