Sir

The note, which I endorsed for Mr. Edmund Randolph for twenty five hundred dollars,2 and is now in your hands, I acknowledge to be as binding on me, as if a demand had been made from me for the same, when it became due or at any time since.

1. This letter was enclosed in Edmund Randolph to H, June 4, 1793. For information on Randolph’s financial difficulties, see Randolph to H, April 3, 1793.

2. This note, which is dated April 5, 1793, and was written and signed by Randolph, is located in the New-York Historical Society. It reads as follows:

“Thirty days after date, I promise to pay to Mr. Wm. Bell or order twenty five hundred dollars for value received.

Dolls. 2500

Edm: Randolph”

H endorsed this note as follows: “Pay the contents to Alexander Hamilton or order.” These words are followed by Bell’s signature.
