Le Sr. Montigny,2 sergent des Grenadiers Dans Luxembourg, et Capitaine d’Armes Sur la fregatte Americaine, ditte, la Caroline du Sud, Sur laquelle il a eté blessé a La Cuisse Se battant Contre deux fregattes Angloises, m’Engage a vous supplier de Lui faire payer Son Du, reconnu par le Certificat ci-inclus a Lui donné, par Le Commandant de la ditte fregatte.3
Qu’il me soit permis, Monseigneur, de vous Supplier de mhonorer de votre reponse a cet egard; en raison de ce que le Sr. montigny est dans la plus affreuse indigence; et lui et moy Convaincus de la justice et de L’humanité de votre Grandeur, osons tout esperer pour L’obtention.

2. Probably Claude Montigny, a French soldier in the 3rd company of the Luxembourg volunteers: James A. Lewis, Neptune’s Militia: the Frigate South Carolina during the American Revolution (Kent, Ohio, and London, 1999), p. 158. He was presumably one of the sergeants discharged by Gillon in November (ibid., p. 47). We cannot fathom his claim of being wounded in action, as we have not located any account of the military engagement described here.
3. The enclosure was a copy of the certificate addressed to S.C. governor Rutledge and signed by Capt. John Joyner on Nov. 20, 1781. De Boy attested it at Bayonne on Feb. 25, the date of the present letter. Joyner certified that Montigny had served under his command, that he was owed 112 l.t. 6 s. by the state of South Carolina for service from June 1 through Nov. 15, 1781, and that he was entitled to a share in the prize brigantine Venus.
