To George Washington from John Churchman, 14 July 1792
From John Churchman
Bank Street Baltimore July 14th 1792.
J. Churchman presents his compliments to the President of the united States, having lately received several Letters from Baron Vall-Travers, in which one is mentioned to be sent by Captain Folgier, which has not come to hand, Understanding that Captain Folgier delivered some Letters last Spring to the President from the Baron,1 J.C. would be very glad to know, in anyway the least troublesome, whether any one came for him at that time, he could never think of troubling the President on this occasi⟨on⟩ if the Baron had not heretofore written to him under cover directed to the Presiden⟨t⟩ he begs leave to add that he informed Vall-Travers what he had in charge.2

1. On 6 Feb. 1792 Capt. Frederick Folger of Baltimore had forwarded to the president Rodolph Valltravers’s letter to GW of 21 July 1791 and its enclosures.
2. At GW’s behest Bartholomew Dandridge replied to Churchman on this day “that the President cannot recollect the precise times that letters from Baron Vall Travers have come under cover to him for Mr Churchman; but the President is very certain none ever came which were not forwarded to Mr Churchman” (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters). For Valltravers’s use of the president as a means to get letters and other materials to Churchman, see Valltravers to GW, 20 Mar., 21 July 1791, and Tobias Lear to Churchman, 10 Sept. 1791.
