James Madison Papers

From James Madison to the Secretary of the Republican Meeting of Nashville, Tennessee, 20 October 1809

To the Secretary of the
Republican Meeting of Nashville, Tennessee

Washington Ocr. 20. 1809

Sir

I have received, under cover of your letter of Sepr. 11. the resolutions of sundry Citizens of Nashville.1

Their determination to maintain the honor and rights of the Nation is a proof of the patriotic spirit which animates them. And it accords with the same spirit, to pledge their support, in the present conjuncture, to the constituted Authorities in such measures as may be found best adapted to it.

The approbation expressed of the measure taken by the Executive, in consequence of the disavowal of the arrangement which had renewed our commerce with the British dominions, contributes to strengthen the conviction of its propriety. I wish my fellow Citizens of Nashville to be assured of the satisfaction I derive from that consn.2 as well as of my respects & friendly wishes

Draft (DLC). Addressed to William Dickson.

1PJM-PS description begins Robert A. Rutland et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Presidential Series (2 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1984-). description ends , 1:372–73. JM had given Dickson a recess appointment as register of the land office in Madison County, Mississippi Territory. The Senate confirmed his appointment on 17 June 1809 (Senate Exec. Proceedings description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends , 2:122, 124).

2Someone, possibly JM at a later time, interlined “consideration” here.
